Colombia is an incredibly diverse Latin American country and the art created by its artists reflects this diversity which has been influenced as much by its geographical accidents as its exposure to influences from Europe, the United States, Caribbean as well as other Latin American art influences.

Historically the art created in Colombia had its roots in religious European styles but over the last century this has developed in some ways alongside the homogeneous tendencies that have arisen in art due to the improved communications networks of the world. No longer is it necessary to spend time abroad to feel the influence of other cultures which are now commonly reflected in the artworks of Colombian youth.

However, many artists in Colombia, usually those over the age of fifty, who still work outside such influences and are much more attached to expressing their genuine Colombian roots rather than let themselves be exposed to the sometimes overwhelming universal influences that quickly arise and occasionally settle in the minds of some artists in Colombia and elsewhere that can often lead to loss or displacement of cultural identity within some of the artworks created nowadays in Colombia.
